It was a weekend of mixed fortunes for LOVB Austin, as they tasted both victory and defeat in their Nebraskan double-header.
Madi’s side made a strong start to Gameweek 11 by beating Omaha 3-2 on Friday evening — but they were unable to follow that up with a second triumph on Saturday, when league-leaders Atlanta ran out 3-0 winners.
Regardless, Austin will be pleased to have snapped a recent run of losses at the Baxter Arena, with a valuable win against the hosts.
A difficult start saw Omaha take the first set by 26:24, but Chris McGown’s team successfully rallied — winning both the second and third sets, 20:25 and 25:15, respectively.
However, Omaha pulled things level in Set 4 (25:23), setting up a tense finale in what was a thrilling fifth set.
Austin were 14:12 down at one stage and had to fight off two further match points, but ended up on the right side of an 18:16 scoreline to claim victory.
Head coach McGown was suitably enthused after the game, saying: “Those are the kind of matches you live for as a player.”
He will, of course, have been less pleased with Austin’s performance the following day, as they were swept by a strong Atlanta side, following scores of 19:25, 21:25 and 15:25 across the three sets.
But McGown had to acknowledge the strength of their opponents, too.
“Atlanta is a really, really nice volleyball team right now,” he explained.
“They got a good flow with their offense, they play great defense, so for us to compete we've got to be pretty close to our best and tonight we just didn't have it.”
Madi put 11 points on the board across her two appearances in Nebraska — and will be looking to further boost her season total on home ground next weekend, when Austin play Omaha and Madison at the Strahan Arena.
